Audience Data: 10 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Data Provider

by Amanda Ivers

Choosing an audience data provider is about more than finding the largest database or the lowest price.

The quality of your audience data influences nearly every aspect of your marketing strategy, from customer acquisition and audience segmentation to personalization and campaign performance. The right partner can help you reach more qualified prospects, reduce wasted advertising spend, and make better marketing decisions. The wrong one can leave you with incomplete data, outdated records, and disappointing results.

So how do you separate marketing claims from meaningful capabilities?

Start by asking the right questions.

Here are 10 questions every marketer should ask before selecting an audience data provider.

1. Where Does Your Data Come From?

The quality of audience data depends on the quality of its sources.

Some providers rely heavily on a single dataset, while others combine information from multiple trusted sources to create richer consumer profiles.

Ask providers to explain where their data originates and how those sources complement one another.

A provider should be transparent about its data sources and how information is collected, standardized, and maintained.

2. How Often Is Your Data Updated?

Consumer information changes constantly.

People move. Buy homes. Change jobs. Purchase vehicles. Grow their families.

If audience data isn’t refreshed regularly, campaign performance can suffer.

Ask how frequently the provider validates and updates its records, and how it manages changes over time.

Fresh data leads to more relevant marketing.

3. How Do You Measure Data Quality?

Every provider claims to have accurate data.

Ask them to explain how they prove it.

Look for providers that invest in ongoing validation, quality assurance, and independent measurement where appropriate.

It’s also worth asking whether they can demonstrate performance using real customer data or pilot programs.

4. What Types of Audience Attributes Do You Offer?

Basic demographics are no longer enough.

Today’s marketers often need insights that go beyond age, income, or ZIP code.

Ask what types of audience attributes are available.

For example:

  • Household characteristics
  • Homeownership
  • Property insights
  • Vehicle ownership
  • Lifestyle interests
  • Purchase behaviors
  • Geographic data
  • Moving activity
  • In-market signals

The broader the range of relevant attributes, the more opportunities you have to build meaningful audience segments.

5. Can You Enrich Our Existing Customer Data?

Your CRM already contains valuable information.

A strong audience data provider should help make it even more valuable.

Audience enrichment adds verified information to existing customer records, helping marketers create more complete customer profiles without asking customers for additional information.

Enrichment can improve segmentation, personalization, and customer acquisition while increasing the value of your first-party data

6. How Do You Handle Identity Resolution?

Customer records don’t stay the same forever.

Consumers change email addresses, relocate, purchase new homes, and update contact information.

Ask how the provider connects these changing identifiers into consistent consumer profiles.

Effective identity resolution helps reduce duplicate records and improves long-term customer recognition across channels.

7. How Easy Is It to Activate the Data?

Great audience data has little value if it’s difficult to use.

Ask whether the provider supports activation across the marketing channels your team already uses, such as:

  • Email
  • Social media
  • Display advertising
  • Connected TV
  • Direct mail
  • CRM platforms
  • Customer data platforms (CDPs)
  • Marketing automation platforms

The easier the activation process, the faster your team can put audience insights to work.

8. How Do You Support Privacy and Compliance?

Privacy expectations continue to evolve.

Ask providers how they approach responsible data practices, consumer privacy, and regulatory compliance.

A reputable audience data provider should be transparent about its privacy practices and committed to helping customers use audience data responsibly.

9. Can You Show Real-World Results?

Instead of asking only about data volume, ask how the provider has helped organizations improve marketing outcomes.

Examples might include:

  • Better audience segmentation
  • Higher campaign response rates
  • Improved customer acquisition
  • Increased personalization
  • More efficient advertising spend

Case studies, customer success stories, and measurable results can provide valuable insight into how the data performs in real marketing environments.

10. Are You a Vendor or a Long-Term Partner?

The best audience data providers do more than deliver data.

They help organizations solve marketing challenges.

Look for a partner that understands your industry, offers strategic guidance, and continues to invest in data quality, innovation, and customer success.

Audience data isn’t a one-time purchase. It’s an ongoing investment in better marketing.

How PGM Answers These 10 Questions

We wrote this guide because these are the questions we get asked most often. Here’s how we answer them.

1. Where does your data come from?

PGM compiles from dozens of sources across every major category of consumer data, including public and courthouse records, county deed and real property data, self-reported survey and registration data, purchase and warranty transactions, catalog and magazine compilation, phone directories, government data, and our own PGM Signals.

People Factors, our consumer data suite, covers 250M+ U.S. consumer profiles, and every attribute we offer is documented back to its source type and whether it is observed, inferred, or modeled.

2. How often is your data updated?

Refresh cadence varies by data type. Our postal file runs NCOA, deceased scrub, DMA suppression, and CCPA opt-out processing monthly, with a full file rebuild quarterly. Email data is scrubbed weekly for hard bounces and campaign opt-outs, with a full rebuild monthly. Phone data sourced from telco connect and disconnect feeds updates daily. New mover records are added daily and weekly.

3. How do you measure data quality?

Two ways: independently and internally. Truth{set} assigns data providers a TruthScore™ Index that measures accuracy within an attribute segment relative to every other provider in that segment, and PGM consistently scores as a leading provider.

Internally, every postal record carries a Confidence Code of 1 through 5 built from Delivery Point Validation, an internal data quality score, source verification, and property fields. A Confidence Code 1 record has been validated by at least three independent sources at the individual level and corroborated again at the household level.

4. What types of audience attributes do you offer?

More than 700 audience attributes spanning demographics, homeownership and property characteristics, vehicle ownership, financial indicators, lifestyle and interests, travel, sports and fitness, purchase behavior, CPG consumption, B2B and professional data, communities and languages, and mover activity.

We also offer proprietary In-Market segments built with Signals data, predictive modeling, and machine learning. Attributes are available at the individual, household, and address level, and we publish a field-level source guide so you can see exactly how each one is built.

5. Can you enrich our existing customer data?

Yes. We append verified demographic, property, vehicle, lifestyle, and purchase attributes to your existing CRM records, along with contact data: email append through our deployable and appendable email files, and forward and reverse phone append against a database of more than 390 million listings.

Append categories span contact, demographic, property, and behavioral signals, so you’re filling CRM gaps across identity and intent rather than just adding a few demographic fields. Enrichment makes your first-party data more useful for segmentation, personalization, and acquisition without asking your customers for anything new.

6. How do you handle identity resolution?

People Factors is built on multi-sourced verification. We link records across sources at both the individual and household level, flagging whether a name and address pair is verified, unverified, or a linkage-only record so you know what you’re working with.

Every consumer carries a persistent individual ID, so changing identifiers such as email addresses and phone numbers stay tied to the same profile instead of fragmenting into duplicate records over time. Because we’re part of the Porch family of companies, we also see the move signal early: we have visibility into more than 80% of U.S. homebuyers annually, which means we can recognize a customer at a new address before most providers know they’ve moved.

7. How easy is it to activate the data?

People Factors audiences are built to activate. We support omnichannel delivery across digital display and connected TV, email and direct mail, social platforms, and CRM — so the segment you build is the segment you can actually reach, without a separate onboarding project for every channel.

8. How do you support privacy and compliance?

Our consumer file is U.S. only. Any data that may contain sensitive personal information is collected with opt-in consent or modeled from non-sensitive, publicly available information. We process CCPA opt-outs on every file update and handle unsubscribe and CCPA requests in real time.

We follow DMA/ANA best practices and CAN-SPAM standards, subscribe to all available federal and state Do Not Call files, and maintain a dedicated privacy and performance team whose only job is compliance and deliverability.

9. Can you show real-world results?

Yes, and we’d rather show numbers than adjectives. A national home and hardware retailer used PGM markers to find customers likely to need a window or roof replacement, and over a six-month test the campaign delivered 30% higher response rates than the retailer’s own models.

A regional tire retailer combined in-market, new mover, and life-event audiences and measured 3.3x ROI, with more than half of pilot gross profit coming from new customers. A New England dealership group cleansed roughly one million CRM records and layered in-market intent on top, producing $1.29m gross in the first 90 days. And a home retail chain that hygiened and appended its email file saw a 43% lift in marketable emails.

10. Are you a vendor or a long-term partner?

We’re built to grow with you rather than sell you a file and disappear. People Factors sits alongside Home FactorsAuto Factors, and Mover Factors, so as your questions get more specific — who’s in market, what are they driving, what’s happening at the property — you’re adding depth to the same consumer view instead of onboarding a new vendor.

We work with marketers across retail, automotive, insurance, home services, and beyond, and the pattern is the same everywhere: the first campaign is a test, and the value compounds once the data is wired into how you segment, model, and measure.

We also publish our sources, our refresh cadence, and our field-level documentation, because we’d rather be evaluated on how the data is built than on how big it is. Ask us the ten questions above. Then ask our competitors the same ones.

Red Flags to Watch For

While evaluating providers, pay attention to warning signs such as:

  • Vague answers about data sources
  • Little transparency around refresh frequency
  • No explanation of data validation
  • Overemphasis on database size alone
  • Limited integration options
  • Few examples of customer success
  • No discussion of privacy practices

If a provider can’t clearly explain how its data is built and maintained, it’s worth asking why.

Final Thoughts

Choosing an audience data provider isn’t about finding the company with the biggest database. It’s about finding the partner that can help you build smarter audiences, improve campaign performance, and create better customer experiences.

By asking thoughtful questions about data quality, refresh frequency, identity resolution, audience enrichment, privacy, and activation, you’ll be better equipped to select a provider that supports your marketing goals today and as they evolve.
