There’s something special about a day on the water; the sound of the waves, the camaraderie, the thrill of the catch. For many veterans, it’s more than just fishing- it’s a moment of peace and a chance to reconnect.
That’s the inspiration behind Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County’s Veterans Inshore Slam Fishing Tournament. One of PGM’s favorite annual events, it blends sport and purpose in a way that’s meaningful, and memorable.
The tournament invites anglers of all skill levels to spend a day fishing for Redfish, Snook, and Trout. But the real catch? Every cast supports Habitat Hillsborough’s Veterans Build Initiative, which provides affordable housing and critical home repairs for U.S. veterans and their families.
A Day of Fun for A Lifetime of Impact
The event includes breakfast, a weigh-in, an after-party with games and prizes, and a bucket of goodies (plus a tournament shirt, of course).
And the impact is obvious. Over the years, the tournament has raised more than $100,000 to support Habitat’s work with veterans. Which includes repaired roofs, fresh coats of paint, safe entryways, and even new homes.
Beyond the financial support, the tournament offers healing, which might be less tangible but it’s equally powerful.
In past years, Habitat Hillsborough has partnered with sponsors to host Wounded Warrior teams, giving veterans who struggle with PTSD a chance to reconnect with nature and each other.
